By giving the film away for "free" the value moves from the object (the film) to the creator (you) where it should be. Like Radiohead or Phish who give away their songs and then make money from personal appearances, artists are attempting to reclaim the "aura of authenticity" that has been lost in the age of mechanical (and digital) reproduction.
